The Spiritual component
The Spiritual Component – Does it Apply ?
Welcome to another in the series Reverse Diabetes – My Journey To Health. In this post we will examine the spiritual component as it relates to good health and reversing diabetes.
While I recognize and respect that all will not agree with my spiritual beliefs, nonetheless it is my hope that all will benefit from the information provided, and the practical approach of My Journey With Diabetes Type 2. At the very least, my hope is that you will be given “food” for thought in relation to the spiritual component of healing.
In the Image of God
Early in the Bible, we are told that God made man in His own image; “Let us make man in
our own image…” (Genesis 1:26). The our referred to in that Scripture is widely accepted
to mean God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Three persons existing in one triune God.
In the same way I believe we are made up of body, mind, and spirit, the spirit being the
spiritual component. Three parts, each of which are interdependent on each other to make us one. It follows therefore that the health of each one affects the health of the other. Most of us
tend to focus more on one or two, to the neglect of the other/s.

The Body is God’s Temple
In 1 Corinthians 3:16 the apostle Paul states: “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?” That tells me clearly that we have a responsibility to be good stewards of our bodies by making every effort to keep it in good
health. If we don’t aspire to this, then we essentially take our bodies for granted.
While the spirit is the part of us that has the potential to communicate with God, hence the spiritual component, and the spirit is the part that lives on when we die, nonetheless I believe that does not negate our responsibility to also be good stewards of our bodies as the gift that it
is.
Self Control
Galatians 5:22 addresses the fruit of the spirit beginning with “…love, joy, peace…” and
ending with “self control.” I believe self control is appropriately placed at the end because
the exercise of self control is needed to apply the others in our lives. In other words, we have
to obey or cooperate with God by the exercise of discipline and “self control.”
Indeed, self control/discipline applies to every area of our lives including what we eat, and
how much we eat. Recognizing that because we are made up of fallen flesh which is in
opposition to the reborn spirit which is in us when we accept Christ as Lord of our lives, sometimes we struggle. Sometimes we stumble such as in my experience with eating that I describe in my blog entitled “No More Medications.” The fact is that we will never reach
perfection this side of heaven, but that does not mean that we should give up. We should
cultivate a desire to please God. Part of which I beleive is to exercise self control and
restraint relative to what we place into our bodies.
Eating the Way God Intended
Everything I’ve read in the Bible convinces me that God intended for us to eat natural
instead of processed foods. Foods such as fruits, grains, nuts, vegetables, and other plant
life. Genesis 1:29 “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole
earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be food for you…
I give every green plant for food.” Of course, Jesus Himself ate fish which makes it
good enough for me. Fish with scales that is… “These shall ye eat of all that are in
the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in
the rivers, them shall ye eat. (Leviticus 11:9). Also, we are allowed to eat the meat of
some animals (Leviticus 11:1-8). Read my blog entitled diet and nutrition for more on
this.
More and more, it is my conviction that if we eat the above foods in moderation, and stay
away from processed foods, we will be well on our way to achieving optimum health in our physical bodies. In other words, we dramatically increase our chances of remaining in
good health until the end of this life as we know it. I remain convinced that many illness, including diabetes type 2 could be avoided by simply eating more wisely. (more)
Healing From God?
I remain convinced that diabetes can be reversed. In Psalm 139:14 the Psalmist says; “I
will praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
Truly the body is “fearfully and wonderfully made.” It never ceases to amaze me as to how resilient it is. The body’s ability to compensate is nothing short of miraculous. When we lose
a limb, or one of two organs such as an eye, the other will tend to become more efficient. The miracle of childbirth, which is taken for granted by many, can only occur if numerous events
that are interdependent on each other occur precisely as intended for a healthy child to be
born.
Anyway, you get my point. The body can, and will recover, if we give it the proper fuel it
needs to recover. Of equal importance however, is the fact that though the body is capable
of sustaining itself through a great deal of abuse and neglect, it is not limitless as to how much
it can endure before it succumbs to disease or ill health.
Since I begin with the premise that God is our creator, and that all knowledge and wisdom
flows from Him, then it follows naturally that ultimately all healing comes from God,
regardless of the means by which that healing is delivered.
