Foods That Can Reverse Type 2 Diabetes: Win-Win!

by 1 Comment

The great thing about the foods that can reverse diabetes is that the same foods that reverse diabetes also can prevent and cure heart disease, auto-immune conditions, and most of the chronic diseases that have become so common, including type 2 diabetes.

Medical doctors who are leading experts in nutrition, including Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Dr. Terry Shintani, Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. Michael Greger, Dr. John McDougall, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., Dr. Michael, Dr. Michael Klaper, Dr. Alan Goldhamer, Dr. Baxter Montgomery, Dr. Steve Lawenda, and many more leading medical doctors with expertise in nutrition, agree that the foods that can reverse diabetes (type 2) are whole food plant-based foods. These board-certified medical doctors collectively have many decades of experience helping their patients reverse type 2 diabetes, heart disease, auto-immune conditions and other diseases and illnesses.

Learn more about these medical doctors who also are leading experts in nutrition here.

Many of these board-certified medical doctors also are best-selling authors, whose books discuss the medical studies, their own personal experience helping patients reverse type 2 diabetes in their medical practices, as well as easy to follow guidance to help you choose whole food plant-based nutrition — the foods that reverse diabetes (type 2).

There is some variation among these medical doctors in terms of which varieties of whole food plant-based foods they emphasize for overall health as well as specifically foods that reverse type 2 diabetes. Following are several variations of medical-doctor-recommended whole food plant-based foods for life that can reverse diabetes (as well as prevent and reverse many other illnesses and disease.)

Dr. Neal Barnard’s Expertise on the Foods that can Reverse Type 2 Diabetes

In board-certified medical doctor Dr. Neal Barnard’s book, Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes without Drugs, you can learn everything you need to know about the disease-reversal power of whole food plant-based nutrition, which are the foods that often result in reducing/eliminating diabetes medications (under your doctor’s medical supervision, as with any diet or lifestyle change) and even reversing type 2 diabetes.

As discussed in detail in Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes without Drugs, here are some of the foods to include to reverse diabetes, as well as foods to avoid.

FOODS TO INCLUDE for Reversing Type 2 Diabetes

(From Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes)

Fruits
Eat unlimited amounts of most fruits, including fruit smoothies (dairy-free) and assorted fresh fruits.

Beans and Legumes
Eat beans, peas, lentils, low-fat tofu, unsweetened soymilk, and fat-free soy foods such as veggie burgers and other meat alternatives.

Whole Grains
Carbohydrate-rich whole grains such as oatmeal, barley, couscous, rice, rye and pumpernickel breads, and pasta.

Vegetables
Eat lots of vegetables including low-glycemic vegetables such as yams and sweet poatoes, green beans, and cauliflower.

Foods to Avoid (for Reversing Type 2 Diabetes)

(From Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes)
AVOID Animal Products – Avoid all red meat, poultry, fish, all dairy products (regular and fat-free), and eggs.

AVOID High-Glycemic Foods – Avoid foods high on the glycemic index, which increase blood sugar too rapidly. These include sugar, white or wheat bread, most cold cereals, and baking potatoes.

AVOID Added Oils (including vegetable oils and other high-fat foods.) Keep added oils to a MINIMUM (or none at all) due to the high-fat content; also keep to a MINIMUM (or not at all) oily toppings, fried foods, peanut butter, olives. Also keep avocados to a minimum (due to high-fat content).

Read more about Dr. Neal Barnard and his explanation why and how whole food plant-based foods can reverse type 2 diabetes, and the role that animal products and fats have in causing type 2 diabetes here.

In addition, as a practical step-by-step introduction to switching to whole food plant-based nutrition, Dr. Neal Barnard offers his online 21-Day Kickstart Program free of charge. Did we mention? Dr. Barnard’s 21-Day Kickstart Program with recipes, meal plans and guidance is FREE.

Watch the short video below to learn more.

Dr. Barnard’s free 21-Day Kickstart program now is available in Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese as well as a free 21-Day Kickstart for people in India.

In addition to Dr. Barnard’s FREE online 21-Day Kickstart program, anyone with type 2 diabetes (and anyone who cares about someone with type 2 diabetes) should first read Dr.Barnard’s book, Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes without Drugs, and consult with your doctor as you make these powerful changes for health so that your doctor can reduce and/or eliminate medications when and to the extent you no longer need them.

Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s Nutritarian Lifestyle and The End of Diabetes

Dr. Joel Fuhrman advocates a “nutritarian” lifestyle, (encouraging people to choose whole food plant-based foods giving priority within each group to the foods that have the most nutrients per calorie).

For type 2 diabetics, Dr. Fuhrman recommends a broad variety of green vegetables, beans, lentils and other legumes, non-starchy vegetables (including mushrooms, onions, garlic, peppers, eggplant), fresh fruits and nuts and seeds.

You can learn in detail about the foods that reverse diabetes (type 2) in Dr. Fuhrman’s book, The End of Diabetes. Dr. Fuhrman’s book The End of Diabetes should be required reading for ANYONE suffering with type 2 diabetes, as well as anyone who cares about someone who is a type 2 diabetic. (Type 1 diabetics also should read Dr. Fuhrman’s book to learn how to improve their insulin sensitivity.)

Dr. Fuhrman also offers a specific diabetes reversal program — currently under $16 — as a companion to his book, called the Transformation 20 Diabetes plan, offering “guidelines, meal plans and recipes for 20 days of Nutritarian-style eating to wipe out type 2 diabetes.” (Read Dr. Fuhrman’s book The End of Diabetes first, as his Transformation 20 Diabetes Plan is a practical step-by-step companion to make it simple to apply what you learn by reading the book).

Always consult with your doctor, as with any diet or lifestyle change, especially since as you begin eating the way Dr. Fuhrman recommends, your doctor may need to reduce your diabetes medications/insulin very soon, within a few weeks or even in a few days.

Other medical doctors who advocate whole food plant-based foods for preventing and reversing disease including type 2 diabetes, may include/allow more starchy vegetables on the menu, for example, Dr. John McDougall’s nutrition program, available free online.

Dr. John McDougall: More than 35 Years of Experience Helping People Reverse Type 2 Diabetes

Dr. McDougall advocates a whole food plant based diet to replace the western diet (aka S.A.D. standard American diet) that most people eat and which causes so much suffering, illness and disease. The whole food plant-based diet that Dr. McDougall advocates includes plenty of filling, delicious starch-based vegetables, as well as including a broad variety of additional nutrient-rich vegetables and fruit.

Listen to Dr. McDougall’s description of the foods that reverse diabetes in this short (2 minutes) video:

In the video, Dr. McDougall emphasizes that,

By definition, type 2 diabetics are ALWAYS curable, by fixing the problem: the western diet. Get rid of it. Substitute it for a starch-based diet with the addition of fruits and vegetables. Lose the associated excess weight, the obesity, and you will be CURED. That’s what the truth is. That’s what the science says, and my more than 35 years of experience as a medical doctor shows that to be true.”

Dr. McDougall notes further that “type 2 diabetes is a dietary disease by definition. so why couldn’t you fix it? YOU CAN.”

You lose the weight, eat a healthy diet, and it goes away, and you get off the pills, and that is, of course, what you want. But, people aren’t hearing that. They are hearing that you need to take one pill after another pill, and then you have to go on insulin shots. These pills make you sick, as a matter of fact they make you even fatter, your diabetes gets worse and you feel lost. And the problem is continuing. Expect, within the next 30 years, that 30% of the population in Western countries will suffer from type 2 diabetes. You don’t have to be one of them!” – Dr. John McDougall, McDougall’s Moments: Cure Type 2 Diabetes without Pills video (watch above).

Dr. McDougall is often quoted for this pithy and to-the-point observation about what causes type 2 diabetes (as well as heart disease and so many other illnesses and disease): “It’s the food!”

Accordingly, it’s also the food that can reverse type 2 diabetes, specifically, an abundance of delicious whole food plant-based foods.

You can sign up FREE online for Dr. John McDougall’s nutrition program, which includes free recipes, meal plans and guidance for weight loss and health.

The Power of Green Vegetables in Reversing Type 2 Diabetes: Eat Your Brussels Sprouts (+ a Recipe to make them DELICIOUS!)

Read below about the foods that reversed the type 2 diabetes of an engineer and former type-2-diabetic who first learned he had type 2 diabetes when he came out of a diabetic coma at the hospital and was told he would need to have both of his legs removed. He was in his early 40s.

He did not go through with any amputations, and in a week’s time brought his blood sugar down to healthy normal range upon his return from the hospital, all thanks to the foods his mother made for him to help him reverse his type 2 diabetes.

He has now been free of diabetes for [14+ years], off the diabetes drugs, off the insulin, all thanks to changing his food choices for life (and for his health for life).

(Scroll down to read more about his type 2 diabetes reversal success story – thanks to his mother preparing for him the kinds of foods that can quickly and easily reverse diabetes.)

One of the most powerful testimonials of how food can quickly reverse type 2 diabetes is the success story of DeWayne McCulley, an engineer and former type 2 diabetic who is the author of the book, Death to Diabetes.

Look for our article about DeWayne McCulley’s journey in the coming days; in the meantime, for anyone looking to learn about the foods that reverse diabetes, it’s important to include at least a brief synopsis here because Mr. McCulley’s story is so instructive and powerful.

More than a decade ago, when DeWayne McCulley was an engineer with Xerox (and in his early 40’s), he awoke one morning with a strange feeling of numbness, as if his limbs had fallen asleep, but worse. His situation quickly became more dire, as he struggled with immobility, haziness and mental fog, and a strong desire to go to sleep, when a voice in his head alerted him, “If you go to sleep, you will not wake up.” Fortunately he was able to call 911. He ended up in a diabetic coma, in the hospital. Previously he had not even known that he was a type 2 diabetic.

DeWayne has described how strange it felt to wake up from the diabetic coma, to find a doctor there, explaining to him that now the doctors would need to remove DeWayne’s legs. In his foggy state having just come back from a coma, DeWayne thought the doctor was saying that they would need to MOVE his legs. The doctor reiterated that they would need to REMOVE both of his legs. DeWayne has described the (surreal and absurd) moment his doctor started talking about how, fortunately, he would be able to save $250 . . . (and DeWayne in his groggy state wondered out loud if the doctor meant $250 per leg, or $250 for both legs). DeWayne’s adult daughter who was there with her father at the hospital told the doctor that they would not be removing her father’s legs.

Even with maximum dosages of diabetes medications and insulin, the doctors at the hospital did not succeed in bringing DeWayne’s blood sugar down further (reduced from 1337 down to 400 with drugs and insulin). They determined there was nothing more they could do so they sent him home (with blood sugar over 400 and a very high A1C while on the maximum doses of drugs and 4 four insulin shots a day).

What happened next may seem miraculous, and it is, except that it’s also another predictable outcome in line with Dr. McDougall’s maxim, “It’s the food!”

DeWayne’s mother and sister came to see him and help take care of him upon his return home from the hospital. DeWayne has described how his mother went into his kitchen and expressed her disappointment that he was not eating the way she had taught him to eat. She had him get rid of all of the frozen pizzas, the processed foods, the pies, everything unhealthy. And instead she replaced his S.A.D. standard American foods/western diet with green vegetables: specifically, BRUSSELS SPROUTS, as well as spinach and broccoli, to turn DeWayne’s health around. (He notes that, at the time, those green vegetables were NOT his favorite foods.)

DeWayne has said that the first morning, he awoke to a breakfast of . . . brussels sprouts … that his mother had prepared. He attempted a weak protest – but then got to eating the brussels sprouts. Listening to DeWayne recount his success story, you can easily imagine DeWayne’s strong mother and her determined mission to rescue her son’s health and his life. DeWayne had no choice but to comply – fortunately for him!

It was fortuitous that DeWayne, as an engineer who likes to scientifically track data and understand what the data shows, had set about testing his blood sugar levels frequently (6 times a day) upon his return from the hospital. He was frequently testing and tracking his blood glucose, and charting the results throughout the day, at least six times a day.

DeWayne’s engineering-minded and fastidious testing, tracking and charting of his blood glucose is why he was able to so quickly discover the stunning, seemingly miraculous direct effect that even his very first brussels sprouts-for-breakfast meal had on him.

This is why it made an immediate impression on DeWayne that day when, a few hours after eating the FIRST brussels sprouts-for-breakfast meal his mother made for him, SUDDENLY his blood sugar fell from over 400 down a hundred points or so to around 300. As his mother continued to prepare these green vegetables for him over the course of the next week (instead of the S.A.D. he had been eating previously), his blood sugar quickly continued to fall down to healthy levels.

Within a week of replacing his previous S.A.D. standard American diet with green vegetables — lots of brussels sprouts — DeWayne’s blood sugar was down to 100 — well within a healthy, normal range.

Remember, and once again consider this: At the time (a few weeks prior) when DeWayne was hospitalized and ended up in a diabetic coma, and was told that he needed to have both of his legs amputated, his blood sugar had been high as 1337!

A week or so after returning from the hospital, when he was sent home taking maximum doses of drugs and 4 daily insulin shots which still only succeeded in lowering his blood sugar to 400 at best, he began eating brussels sprouts (no added oils) for breakfast and green vegetables and healthy whole food plant-based foods to replace the S.A.D. standard American diet he had eaten previously.

Brussels Sprouts
Green vegetables – especially brussels sprouts for breakfast – helped DeWayne McCulley reverse his type 2 diabetes.

Only ONE WEEK of eating brussels sprouts for breakfast and lots of green vegetables and healthy whole food plant-based foods, DeWayne’s blood sugar had dramatically fallen to a healthy, normal level, testing at 100.

As he continued to eat this way over the course of the following weeks and months his A1C levels fell to consistently perfectly healthy, low levels.

DeWayne was in contact with and under the supervision of his doctor as all of this unfolded. (Anyone who makes diet and lifestyle changes must do so under their doctor’s close supervision).

His doctor’s response was that it was just “an anomoly” – his doctor was adamant that DeWayne’s drastically lowered healthy blood sugar numbers could have NOTHING to do with the food.  His doctor tested and re-tested but didn’t believe the results of the doctor’s own tests. This doctor refused to believe that type 2 diabetes could be reversed, even when seeing the reversal clearly with his own eyes through the doctor’s own testing and repeated re-testing.

Fortunately DeWayne’s training and expertise as an engineer gave him the confidence and skill to thoroughly investigate the CAUSES of this awful type 2 diabetes disease that nearly killed him, leaving him in a diabetic coma. After experiencing the seemingly miraculous reversal of his own type 2 diabetes — initially by eating brussels sprouts for breakfast, spinach and broccoli, whole food plant-based foods with no added oils — he set out on a mission to determine what causes type 2 diabetes, and to understand scientifically those causes in order to help other people REVERSE type 2 diabetes as he had.

The diabetic coma he experienced had been like a strike of lightning from out of the blue since, prior to the time he ended up nearly losing his life and in a diabetic coma in the hospital, and awoke to his doctor telling him he would need to have both legs amputated, he hadn’t even known previously that he had type 2 diabetes. He was working diligently as an engineer, living his life, in his early 40s, when BAM! Type 2 diabetes struck him with full force all of the sudden and all at once, seemingly out of the blue.

DeWayne McCulley has described how whole food plant-based foods — SPECIFICALLY, GREEN VEGETABLES, and SPECIFICALLY brussels sprouts, spinach and broccoli were the foods that helped him reverse his type 2 diabetes, quickly and easily. These were the foods that his mother prepared for him in those first weeks upon his return home from the hospital, to REPLACE the S.A.D. western diet he had previously been eating.

Moving forward, switching to a focus primarily on whole food plant-based foods for life allowed DeWayne to reverse his type 2 diabetes, and he was able to get off all of the drugs and insulin.

However his doctor, despite repeated tests over the next six months, still refused to believe the results of the doctor’s own tests, and kept telling DeWayne he should stay on the drugs and the insulin even though DeWayne’s tests showed that his blood sugar and his A1C (at 4.3) both were consistently at perfectly stellar healthy levels. Instead, DeWayne is happy to be drug-free and insulin-free and free of type 2 diabetes, thanks to switching to whole food plant-based foods (no added oils) for more than 14 years now!

Since that time DeWayne McCulley has become an expert, author, health coach and public speaker who now helps other people reverse type 2 diabetes, through his book, Death to Diabetes, as well as through his other programs, coaching, and speaking engagements.

DeWayne McCulley’s health transformation all began in one miraculous week of initial healing thanks to his mother who knew best: she innately KNEW that green vegetables, including lots of brussels sprouts (for BREAKFAST!), spinach and broccoli could help him to self-heal. She was right! These are some of the foods that reverse diabetes, along with the variety of nutrient-rich foods within the larger universe of delicious, filling, whole-foods plant-based foods. These are the foods that DeWayne McCulley continues to eat for his health for life, having long ago ditched the S.A.D. standard American diet in favor of his health and his life.

How to Reverse Diabetes

by Leave a Comment

An ever-increasing number of medical doctors now are teaching people how to reverse diabetes, (specifically reversing type 2 diabetes, and improving insulin sensitivity for type 1 diabetics), in an easy to follow, step-by-step, simple way.

Even better, the exact same simple method that can reverse type 2 diabetes (so that, under their own doctor’s supervision, type 2 diabetics often are able to reduce or discontinue diabetes medications and insulin, sometimes within just a few days or weeks, as they make these changes), also offers additional phenomenal health benefits.

In addition to reversing type 2 diabetes, the exact same simple, easy to follow method (described below) also can prevent and reverse heart disease, dramatically lower cholesterol, dramatically improve blood pressure, prevent and reverse auto-immune conditions, asthma, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and even helps to prevent cancer. For many people skin conditions clear up; migraine headaches go away. Fantastic lifelong health benefits result from making the exact same diet change that prevents and even reverses type 2 diabetes.

Medical Doctors Teaching How to Reverse Diabetes

The great news is that more and more board-certified medical doctors are learning how to reverse diabetes (type 2 diabetes, as well as also ameliorating overall health and improving insulin sensitivity for type 1 diabetics).

These doctors are teaching their patients the easy, simple method for reversing type 2 diabetes and losing weight without counting calories, without measuring, without feeling hungry, while increasing energy and dramatically improving overall health and healing illnesses, lowering cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, and preventing illnesses and disease.

Fortunately, many of these board-certified doctors now have also written worldwide best-selling books about how to reverse diabetes, including all of the step-by-step guidance you need to get started right away on your journey to reclaim your health and choose your own health destiny.

As discussed in these books, and as emphasized by all of these medical doctors, it is critically important that, as you make these changes in your life (and as you make any diet and lifestyle changes, especially if you are on medications) you do so under the close supervision of your own medical doctor so that your doctor can monitor your progress and reduce and discontinue diabetes medications and other medications and drugs when and to the extent necessary.

It would be very dangerous to continue taking diabetes drugs, insulin and other medications when and to the extent you no longer need them as you make these specific diet and lifestyle changes that are specifically detailed in the books listed below.

So, as always, consult with your doctor, let your doctor know that you will be making diet and lifestyle changes and will need your doctor’s close supervision as you make these changes.

To learn more about some of the many U.S. board-certified medical doctors who show their patients how to reverse diabetes using the same simple method, specifically how to reverse type 2 diabetes and improve insulin sensitivity for type 2 diabetics, read our article HERE for more details.

As discussed in our article linked above, these medical doctors all have impressive educations, impressive backgrounds, including Harvard-educated doctors, doctors who earned their medical degrees from some of the best, most prestigious medical schools in the United States, and they all are teaching their patients how to reverse type 2 diabetes using the same, easy to follow method, that also prevents and reverses heart disease and most of the chronic disease and auto-immune conditions from which so many people suffer unnecessarily.

Read on below to learn about the step by step, simple method to prevent and reverse type 2 diabetes from two of these U.S. board-certified medical doctors.

What better way to learn how to reverse diabetes than to learn from medical doctors who also have decades of personal experience in their medical practices helping people to reverse type 2 diabetes?

If you want to reverse type 2 diabetes, or help someone you care about learn how to reverse type 2 diabetes (by making these same changes with them, out of solidarity and support for the person you care about — which is a very powerful factor), then read (at a minimum) these two books, from cover to cover.

Read Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes without Drugs,

and read Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s The End of Diabetes.

Read these two books AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and implement what you learn to begin on the journey to reclaim your health for life. If you or someone you care about is suffering from type 2 diabetes, time is of the essence to make the kinds of changes that Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, and many other medical doctors teach about how to reverse diabetes, to give yourself the best possible foundation to reverse type 2 diabetes. The sooner you make these specific, powerful, easy to follow “diet and lifestyle” changes (under your medical doctor’s supervision) the better!

How to Reverse Type 2 Diabetes – Dr. Neal Barnard’s Simple, Powerful Program for Diabetes Reversal

Neal Barnard M.D., is a board-certified medical doctor (and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology – F.A.C.C.), whose medical practice is in Washington, DC. He is an adjunct associate professor of medicine at the George Washington University (GWU) School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, D.C. and also earned his medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Through his work at George Washington University, his medical practice, his best-selling books, and the major health organization he founded, Dr. Barnard helps people dramatically improve their health, and he specifically specializes in helping people learn how to reverse diabetes (type 2).

Learn more about Dr. Neal Barnard’s medical practice, the ground-breaking scientific studies he has led regarding the role of nutrition in type 2 diabetes (funded by the National Institutes of Health – NIH), and his decades of experience below.

Dr. Barnard grew up on a cattle farm in Fargo, North Dakota, as did his father, and grandfathers before him, for generations. However his father got out of the cattle business and instead became a medical doctor whose expertise was in diabetes.

Dr. Barnard has said that growing up, he never heard his M.D. father talking about patients recovering from type 2 diabetes or getting better or stopping diabetes medications. From hearing his father’s descriptions, Dr. Barnard got the impression that the only thing a doctor specializing in diabetes was trained to do at the time was to prescribe more and more drugs, while diabetic patients got sicker and sicker.

Sound familiar? Have you ever heard a doctor prescribe diabetes drugs rather than addressing — and teaching people how to reverse — the cause of the disease?

Fast forward to present time: Neal Barnard followed in his father’s footsteps by himself becoming a board-certified medical doctor. However, unlike his father, Dr. Barnard has learned the simple process for how to reverse type 2 diabetes, and he helps his patients to reverse their type 2 diabetes, and reduce or get off all of the medications in many cases.

Dr. Barnard also has headed up ground-breaking medical studies (going back more than a decade) regarding how to reverse diabetes by addressing the cause of type 2 diabetes through nutrition (specifically reversing type 2 diabetics in many cases, as well as improving insulin sensitivity for type 1 diabetics).

All of these impressive and live-changing, life-saving diabetes reversal results come from one simple method, with easy to follow step-by-step guidance (as set forth in his book) that is the HOW TO for reversing type 2 diabetes with simple, specific diet and lifestyle changes.

In order to learn how to reverse diabetes, it is important to understand how type 2 diabetes happens in the first place.

Dr. Barnard describes the science behind the causes/triggers that create type 2 diabetes and insulin insensitivity, both in his books, and in his speaking engagements around the U.S. and around the world, as well as through the NIH-funded (National Institute of Health) scientific studies investigating the causal link between nutrition and diabetes that Dr. Barnard has led beginning more than 15 years ago.

To paraphrase in a nutshell (paraphrased here in layman’s terms), Dr. Barnard describes how type 2 diabetes occurs as a result of an excess of fats (eaten in foods) building up at a (microscopic) cellular level inside the muscle cells (intramyocellular lipids) and inside the liver cells (intrahepatic lipids).

When these tiny particles of fat (intramyocellular lipids and intrahepatic lipids) build up inside the muscle cells and inside the liver cells, the fat (lipids) block insulin’s ability to transport glucose into the cells. The cells need glucose (which is stored as glycogen) for energy and for basic essential functions including regulating body temperature.

Since the insulin is blocked by intramyocellular lipids from transporting glucose into the cells, blood sugar builds up in the blood, but is not reaching the body’s cells — including brain cells! — that need the glucose/glycogen to function optimally.

This leads to feelings of brain fog (since the brain is not getting the glucose/glycogen fuel it needs) and tiredness, weakness (muscle cells not getting the glucose/glycogen fuel they need for even basic baseline activity.)

And as any diabetic can attest, that tired/low-energy feeling only scratches the surface of the havoc wreaked upon the body by diabetes.

Since this is such an important topic in understanding how to reverse diabetes, read Dr. Barnard’s description below, in his own words, (quoted from a recent interview) about how type 2 diabetes happens as a result of the foods people choose to eat (or, for children with type 2 diabetes, the foods their parents/caregivers – unwittingly — choose for them).

Dr. Barnard recently described how type 2 diabetes happens and how to reverse diabetes in a recent interview videotaped for the Plant Fit Summit 2018:

[F]or some reason [some] people have really missed the science, that has been out there for 15 years or more, which is as follows: that when you eat fatty foods, the fat can enter the muscle cells and the liver cells, as tiny particles of fat called intramyocellular lipid in the muscle cell, or intrahepatocellular lipid in the liver cell. They stop insulin from being able to work. They gum up the cell if you want to put it that way, so the insulin can no longer bring sugar into the cell.

And the answer is to get the fat out of the diet. . . . A vegan diet has no animal fat at all, and if [you] keep the vegetable oils really low, we then believe that fat inside the cell [dissipates], and the insulin resistance will go away, and the diabetes has a chance of going away too, especially if you catch it early.

Now, [for] the people who say ‘Well, when I avoid sugar I do better,’ it’s true that if your cells are full of fat and they can’t take in sugar, then to the extent that you avoid sugar and you avoid carbohydrate, your blood sugar will not go up so much.

But you need to fix the cause of it, and the cause of it is this build-up of fat, especially animal fat, but vegetable oil can contribute too, and you want to get that out of your cells.” (Plant Fit Summit 2018 Dr. Neal Barnard interview, at 5:31, emphasis added.)

Dr Barnard continues:

[When you switch to a whole food plant-based low-fat diet], what we believe is happening is the fat that is inside the cell starts to dissipate, and then the insulin which your body is making anyway … will attach to the cell, and it will allow the blood sugar to come down. The sugar in the blood now can go into the cell more easily because [much of] that fat is gone. And that fat is the cause of the insulin resistance which is causing the disease. So when a person goes on a low fat vegan diet, what they discover is sometimes their blood sugar falls REALLY fast, even if they are eating a lot of carbohydrate.

Their blood sugar will fall, and that’s because their insulin resistance is going away, their insulin sensitivity is returning. And that can happen within the first week in some cases. They lose weight, their cholesterol falls, their blood pressure falls, their need for medication goes way, way down, their energy comes up.

. . . .

[E]verybody is different; if you catch this disease early, in some cases it just goes away. If a person has had diabetes for 30 years, it’s not necessarily going to go away, it may well not, because they’re not producing as much insulin as before, but nonetheless this is still the kind of diet they want to be on, because it protects their arteries that would be assaulted by the disease. You don’t want any cholesterol. You don’t want any animal fat in your diet, you want to protect yourself.” – Dr Barnard interview, 2018 Plant Fit Summit at 5:52 to 7:25.

Dr. Barnard also notes the dramatic weight loss benefits of switching to whole food plant-based nutrition (low- or no-added-oil): “[T]he proof of it is [clear when people] come into our clinic, and we put people on a low fat vegan diet, and they lose weight like crazy. They are not building more body fat [by eating whole food plant-based carbohydrate/fiber-rich, no-oil-added foods.]”

. . . .

Until fairly recently, people thought [type 2 diabetes] was irreversible. We now know that [type 2] diabetes isn’t so much a diagnosis that you get and you keep, so much as it is a state that you get in, and it can change. It can get worse, it can get better, and in certain cases, it can go away.

[With healthy whole food plant-based low-oil nutrition,][for] a LOT of people, particularly if you catch this early, they can tackle this disease and it can go away, and they can live a totally normal life.

I’m very excited about this.”

Dr. Barnard concludes:

I am happy to say that convention is changing, but when we got started in all of this, the conventional diet was cutting calories to help people lose weight, because most people with type 2 diabetes needed to lose weight … And the idea was well, just eat less. And that wasn’t so hot, because if you give a person a menu that just cuts out a lot of foods, by Wednesday they want to eat the sofa, because people don’t want to be hungry.

So instead [we teach people to reverse diabetes through a whole food plant-based diet] that fills you up with high fiber healthy foods that are satisfying so you don’t have the hunger.” Dr. Neal Barnard, 2018 Plant Fit Summit.

When asked what percentage of people succeed in reversing type 2 diabetes in percentage, Dr. Barnard clarified that,

it depends entirely on how long the person has had the disease, and how well they [commit to whole food plant-based low- or no-added-oils nutrition]. If you get a person who is just tipping into the disease, I think in virtually every case it can be reversed (when I say reversed, I mean go away with no medication).

But on the other hand, most people at the time they are diagnosed have had the condition for five years or more. And at that case their body has been hurt by it. The pancreas has beta cells that make insulin, and they have been beat up by this disease.

And the longer this goes on, the harder it is for them to recover. . . . So get to it early.”

It’s Never Too Late to Try! Learn How to Reverse Diabetes by Switching to Whole Food Plant-Based Nutrition – Try it for 30 Days (under your doctor’s supervision) and See What Happens!

Editor’s Note: Dr. Joel Fuhrman has said that in his decades of medical practice and experience in helping his patients to reverse their type 2 diabetes, around 90% are able to reverse their type 2 diabetes.

In Dr. Fuhrman’s experience helping his own patients learn how to reverse diabates, some patients reduce their medications but still must take some reduced level of diabetes medications and/or insulin, especially if these patients have already been taking diabetes medications and insulin for many decades.

However, Dr. Fuhrman also has said that, in his personal experience with his own type 2 diabetic patients’ results, even many of the patients who have been type 2 diabetic and on drugs/insulin for years, often are able to get off the drugs completely.

Try it for 30 days (under your doctor’s close supervision, as with any diet and lifestyle change) and see what happens.

Step-by-Step and One Step at a Time: Dr. Barnard’s Book Teaches How to Reverse Diabetes

Read Dr. Barnard’s book, Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes without Drugs from cover to cover.

Consult with your doctor before making these nutritional changes since making these nutritional changes can quickly result in powerful excellent, changes for your health which usually will also require reduction or elimination of diabetes drugs/insulin to the extent and when no longer needed, as determined by your doctor under your doctor’s medical supervision.

In a nutshell, when asked in the Plant Fit Summit 2018 interview what steps people should take in the real world to lose weight and reverse diabetes while NOT counting calories, not measuring or weighing, and not feeling hungry, Dr. Barnard explained that:

If a person eliminates animal products, [first] take a week, figure out what you like to eat that’s free of animal product. [For example, oatmeal with blueberries or strawberries on top.] Figure out what these foods are, and as time goes on, even though you aren’t intentionally cutting calories, by choosing low fat, high fiber foods you are getting full sooner.

[By eating this way] you aren’t thinking about it, you aren’t trying to lose weight; it just happens and it can be very significant.

The average person loses between half a pound to a pound a week. With 52 weeks in a year, [the average weight loss by switching to whole food plant-based low- or no-added-oils nutrition] is between 26 and 52 pounds per year. A person can easily lose 20 Kg in course of a year, that’s not uncommon at all.” – Dr. Neal Barnard, 2018 Plant Fit Summit interview.

Dr. Barnard also points out that the benefits of exercise apply whether you walk or whether you run, so starting out on your weight loss and diabetes reversal journey, do what you can to get some level of exercise in. Exercising muscle pulls sugar out of the blood with very little insulin. Dr. Barnard notes that studies show that exercise affects the brain, improving memory. However Dr. Barnard reiterated that when people exercise, they need fuel. Exercise works with diet, but it doesn’t take place of a healthy whole food plant-based (low- or, ideally, no-added oils) diet.

Finally, Dr. Barnard pointed out that we are now seeing (both in the US and other parts of the world) a LOT of elite athletes switching to whole food plant-based nutrition, including marathon runners (for example, Rich Roll, Brendan Frasier), NBA basketball players, tennis players (Serena and Venus Williams), and star NFL quarterback football players (Aaron Rogers of the Green Bay Packers and Tom Brady of the New England Patriots), just to name a few examples out of many whole food plant-based elite and Olympic athletes.

Whole food plant-based nutrition is an anti-inflammatory diet, which results in better blood flow, and oxygenation of your muscles. Instead of being sore for 3 days, whole food plant-based elite athletes are back building and exercising again.

Watch for our article on the subject of elite professional athletes and Olympic athletes who have switched to whole food plant-based nutrition for strength, endurance, superior performance, faster recovery and overall health, coming soon to reversediabetes2.com.

Dr. Barnard’s advice for anyone who is skeptical and finds it difficult to believe how food can have such a huge impact on our health and performance, as well as the power of healthy whole food plant-based nutrition for reversing type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Barnard points out in his recent 2018 Plant Fit Summit interview that skepticism is good, but he encourages them to get some good information, including Dr. Barnard’s books, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn Jr’s books, Dr. Dean Ornish’s books, Dr. Michael Greger’s book, and Dr. John McDougall’s books (just to name a few!)

All of these medical doctors address prevention and reversal of type 2 diabetes and prevention and reversal of heart disease, chronic disease, auto-immune conditions and many others USING THE SAME, simple method, so reading one or more of the books mentioned above will give you the tools you need to learn how to reverse diabetes type 2 and change the course of your own health destiny.

The more you learn the better.

If you are skeptical, learn more.

Learn about the science behind the cause of type 2 diabetes (by reading these books) so that you can understand how to reverse diabetes in the way that is recommended by all of these board-certified medical doctors with impeccable academic and medical practice credientials.

Read as many of the books mentioned above as you can; start with Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes without Drugs.

For example, read (and watch first-hand in video and documentaries) the diabetes reversal success stories of Joey Aucoin (Forks Over Knives documentary), Dr. Steve Lawenda (medical doctor who reversed his own pre-diabetes and quickly transformed from being obese to being strong, healthy and fit), Amy Johnson of Frisco, Texas (originally from upstate New York — reversed her type 2 diabetes more than 6 years ago, quickly lost weight and no longer is obese), Jim Balla of Detroit, MI, Kirt Tyson, N.D.A., Joseph Alexander, Nick Delgado (expert in diabetes reversal, longevity, as well as 60+ year old bodybuilder, world record holder for weight/endurance), Patty of Mebane, NC (PlantPure Nation documentary), Jason Mraz’s bandmate (reversed type 2 diabetes in under 30 days while on tour with Jason Mraz’s band), and many more diabetes reversal success stories all in one place here at reversediabetes2.com.

These diabetes reversal testimonials in videos and documentaries that you can watch for yourself are a great source of inspiration as well as instructional to help you understand how to reverse diabetes type 2.

A recurring statement by so many of the people who have reversed their type 2 diabetes by switching to whole food plant-based nutrition is how EASY it is! How easy it was to reverse the type 2 diabetes; how easy it was to lose all of the weight. Never feeling hungry, not having to weigh food, not having to count calories. Having the excess weight fall off practically effortless after making this change, as well as, in many cases, quickly reducing and then eliminating diabetes drugs under their medical doctors’ close supervision as they made these powerful, but simple and easy, nutritional changes.

Final Note on How to Reverse Diabetes While Maintaining a Healthy Skepticism

Dr. Barnard encourages you not to throw out your skepticism; he has said that skepticism is healthy. But he encourages type 2 diabetics to try it. (1) Try a vegan (whole food plant-based, no-oil added) diet for a while. Take a week, try out vegan foods, see which ones you like. (2) Then, after you have figured out which whole food plant-based (aka vegan) foods you like the best, take 3 weeks and do all vegan all the time and see what happens.

Dr. Barnard says that, in his decades of experience with patients in his medical practice (as well as in NIH-funded medical studies that he led), for most people, the results include weight loss, dramatically improved blood sugar numbers, lowered blood pressure, improved cholesterol numbers, digestion better, migraines headaches go away, and more (often allowing people to reduce or eliminate medications under their doctor’s close supervision, when and to the extent medications are not longer needed thanks to the powerful health benefits of switching to whole food plant-based nutrition).

Dr. Barnard’s success formula for how to reverse diabetes type 2 begins with this: Switch to whole food plant-based (no added oils) in the short term as an experiment for 3 weeks, and then . . . don’t stop.

Editor’s note: We hear over and over again in diabetes reversal success stories that when people make this change, they find that they feel so much better they don’t want to stop!

Finally, Dr. Barnard emphasizes that once you switch to whole food plant-based nutrition (aka vegan), “that’s not the end of your diet exploration, that’s just the beginning . . . You’ve gotten the animal products out, now you can explore to find what is BEST for you. Explore culinary traditions such as Mediteranean foods [but no-added oil], Latin American foods, Asian foods… explore and veganize them all. It’s a door you will be so happy you walked through because it will change your life.” – Dr Neal Barnard, Plant Fit Summit 2018

Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Permanently with Dr. Joel Fuhrman

by Leave a Comment

Joel Fuhrman MD is a board certified family physician and best-selling author who has cured hundreds of people of type 2 diabetes using diet and lifestyle. He is one of the experts world-wide in helping people reverse type 2 diabetes, along with preventing and reversing all kinds of chronic disease and illnesses.

WATCH THIS VIDEO (!!!) (below) if you are diabetic, or if you care about someone who is, and want to learn the truth about how you can reverse type 2 diabetes, directly from Dr. Fuhrman.

The video is only a few minutes long, but it packs critical information that anyone with type 2 diabetes, or cares about someone who has diabetes, needs to know.

This concise video excerpt from Dr. Fuhrman’s presentation at a health conference gives you:

(1) Inspiration, coming from one of the leading experts in the world, that type 2 diabetes can be reversed and that this is the case for his patients from Dr. Fuhrman’s personal experience over the course of decades of his medical practice. This is very powerful inspiration for any type 2 diabetic to hear. Read the transcript excerpt under the video below.

(2) Dramatic, specific examples of two of Dr. Fuhrman’s patients who have reversed their type 2 diabetes and gotten off all of the diabetes drugs and insulin very quickly; as well as

(3) An extraordinarily sobering story about what happened when a major association dealing with diabetes asked Dr. Fuhrman to write an article for their magazine that goes out to type 2 diabetics all over the country.

WATCH THE 3-MINUTE VIDEO BELOW TO HEAR DR. FUHRMAN DESCRIBING WHAT HAPPENED, FIRST HAND — Every type 2 diabetic should watch this and decide to take control of their own health destiny.

Upon receiving the article, in which Dr. Fuhrman described four examples of his patients who have completely reversed their type 2 diabetes and gotten off all of the drugs, he got a call from the association, asking him to please remove the reference to the fact that his patients no longer had to take the drugs or insulin.

Why? The association’s representative explained on the phone to Dr. Fuhrman that the drug company that makes insulin funds the association’s magazine that goes out to diabetics all across the country. So the magazine would not print Dr. Fuhrman’s article giving concrete examples of type 2 diabetic patients who reversed their diabetes and completely got off all of the drugs and insulin, unless he would revise it to take out the part about the patients’ health transformation and getting off the drugs and insulin. Of course Dr. Fuhrman chose not to revise the article, and it was not published in the association’s magazine.

This story is so very sobering — and disturbing — because type 2 diabetics all across the country (who are members of this association) did not get to benefit from reading the article to learn about how Dr. Fuhrman’s patients are reversing their type 2 diabetes, and how they too can choose to transform their health for life.

They (maybe you included?) didn’t get the benefit of learning this, because the association of which they are members pulled Dr. Fuhrman’s article instead of making this life-changing and life-saving information available to the association’s type 2 diabetic members, solely because Dr. Fuhrman wouldn’t revise the article to edit out the fact that these 4 patients had transformed their health and gotten off all of the insulin and drugs as a result of changing their diet following Dr. Fuhrman’s recommendations. Watch the video below and read the transcript excerpt below.

As a corollary to this story, also watch the documentary, What the Health, and pay close attention to the same association’s reaction (in this case, one of the top medical officials of that association) to questions about how the right kind of food can powerfully transform health and have a positive impact for type 2 diabetes . . . the association’s top medical representative literally walks out and leaves the interview. WATCH What the Health and see for yourself so you can be fully informed.

Watch the video here (the video below is an excerpt from Dr. Furhman’s presentation at the Healthy Lifestyle Expo 2007).

TRANSCRIPT of video excerpt above:

We have to put all those factors into account if we are devising a diet for a person who is diabetic, and we want to get optimal results. And we have to, at the same time, promise them with 100% certainty, and this is the most important thing, that if you follow this I can guarantee you you won’t need those diabetic medications and you can cut your diabetic medications down right away. We’ll have you become — you won’t be ‘controlling’ your diabetes, if you are type 2 we will be having you become UN-diabetic.

And you’ll get dramatic results that will add many years to your life, and prevent you from developing blindness, leg amputations, kidney failures, and all of these horrendous tragedies that befall people with diabetes, and could be tremendously motivating.

I remember once I had a patient who was sent to me by a [nephrologist via endriconologist referal to the nephrologist]. His blood sugar was 400 to 500, and he was on about 300 units of insulin a day. I said, ‘What?!’ Plus, oral medications too. This guy got off his insulin completely in the first month. He was a huge guy, and he already had his toes cut off, by the way.

The doctor who sent him to me wasn’t the dietologist or endicronologist; they never send me the patient, they know the minute they do, they lose the patient. The diebetologist sends them to the nephrologist when their kidney function starts going bad. The dietologist refers them to the nephrologist, and the nephrologist refers them to me. They always come to me in that back door. Never from the diebetologist directly. And of course, the guy’s kidney function got better.

I remember one story where this lady, her name was Janet, she was a school principal, she went into the emergency room with a complication of her diabetes, she is a lovely lady, and the emergency room doctor liked her so much that he whispered in her ear, ‘Don’t tell anybody, but go see Dr. Fuhrman. But DON’T tell anybody I told you that.” So this lady comes in to see me, and to make a long story short, she gets better from her diabetes, and she writes this beautiful article that gets published in a publication for school principals, because she was a school principal. And the American Diabetic Association, someone working for them, picks up this article, and they call me on the phone, and they say, can you write an article for our national magazine that goes out to all diabetics/people with diabetes, and I say, ‘Sure,’ and they send me a check for $750. I said, ‘Write it for nothing,’ but if they pay me check for $750, great. . . . I write the article, I send it in, and they call me back on the phone and say, ‘Dr. Fuhrman, we can’t print your article as it’s written, because you have an example of four patients, all who came off their diabetic medications. And our magazine is sponsored by Ely Lilly who makes insulin. So can you tone it down [to say that] patients are improving, but not coming off their medications.’ And I said, ‘No, I can’t.’ So I just sent them their check back. But it was a really nice person on the phone, she admitted to me what the problem was … I didn’t want to change it [the article] so I guess I didn’t.” – transcript, video above, excerpt from Dr. Fuhrman’s presentation at the Healthy Lifestyle Expo 2007

ALSO watch the documentary, What the Health and decide for yourself. Type 2 diabetes is a disease of choice; that’s great news because you can choose to make the changes that Dr. Fuhrman teaches (under the close supervision of your doctor so that your doctor can reduce and eliminate the diabetes and other medications when and to the extent you no longer need them as you make the dietary changes that Dr. Fuhrman recommends.)

Read Dr. Fuhrman’s book The End of Diabetes to learn step-by-step how to reverse type 2 diabetes as well as heart disease and prevent and reverse disease and illness all from changing the foods you eat, never counting calories, never measuring, while eating lots of delicious food and feeling satisfied, not feeling hungry.

What most people say — you will hear this over and over again in video testimonials from people from all walks over life, ages, backgrounds — is that when they change to this way of eating and reverse their type 2 diabetes, the thing that most surprised them is how EASY it is, EASY to lose the weight, reverse the type 2 diabetes, and how EASY, delicious, and pleasurable it is eat this way for life.

Reverse Type 2 Diabetes with Dr. Baxter Montgomery

by 1 Comment

Dr. Baxter D. Montgomery helps his patients prevent and reverse disease type 2 diabetes, & prevent and reverse heart disease and reduce or eliminate medications.

First, just watch this short video introduction (a minute or so long) about Dr. Montgomery’s work. Just … watch this, and ask yourself, why hasn’t everyone learned about Dr. Montgomery, his philosophy, and his approach to medicine?

As described in the video above, Dr. Montgomery helped an 89 year old patient reverse her type 2 diabetes. He helped the 89-year-old woman who had been on insulin for FORTY years, and who was taking 22 medications, to get off the insulin within a couple of days of her having switched to a raw, whole food plant-based detox diet. She is down to taking no medications at all, and now, in her mid-nineties, she hardly ever has to come in to see Dr. Montgomery as a patient, because she remains so healthy after switching to whole food plant-based nutrition.

Over the years Dr. Montgomery has helped so many people reverse heart disease and reverse type 2 diabetes.

As shown in the video, Dr. Montgomery’s health clinic has a vegan restaurant on-site, serving delicious whole food plant-based foods, to show his patients how easy it is to be healthy and enjoy delicious foods. He also has a gym on-site at his medical health clinic.

Why aren’t the majority of medical doctors helping patients to prevent and REVERSE type 2 diabetes, reverse heart disease along with so many other chronic ailments, through such a simple solution? The solution is the food. It’s the food (the S.A.D. standard American diet) that causes these diseases, and it’s the RIGHT KIND OF FOOD — whole food plant-based nutrition — that can quickly reverse disease including type 2 diabetes and heart disease and many others.

Dr. Montgomery specializes in internal medicine, clinical cardiac electrophysiology, internal medicine, and cardiovascular disease. He also is the owner of the Houston Cardiac Association. Dr. Montgomery is a plant-based doctor who has helped his patients reverse their type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and prevent and reverse illness and disease with a whole food plant-based diet. Dr. Montgomery is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and his patients come to him with a range of conditions including type 2 diabetes, as well as arrhythmias and coronary disease.

He performs angiography, defibrillator implants, and other hospital procedures, and teaches young physicians, and for many years now Dr. Montgomery also teaches his patients how to prevent and REVERSE heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and so many other chronic diseases, all using the exact same method, switching to a whole food plant-based diet.

In 2002, at age 38, Dr. Montgomery’s cholesterol was elevated, and his mother passed away from heart disease and diabetes (as well as complications caused by the medications). This was a wake-up call that caused Dr. Montgomery to re-evaluate his own health and his understanding of and approach to medicine. He read scientific studies and books about nutrition, and changed his diet to whole food plant-based nutrition. As a result, he lowered his cholesterol dramatically. Upon seeing the many benefits he experienced for his own health, he began to incorporate nutritional education into his practice with his patients.

Upon learning about how Dr. Montgomery was helping his patients prevent and reverse heart disease, and prevent and reverse type 2 diabetes, the FOX 5 News station in Atlanta interviewed him for a segment. The news station’s focus for the interview was on Dr. Montgomery’s patients reversing diabetes. After the show aired, the phone lines went crazy. So many people were calling the Fox news station and Dr. Montgomery’s office, wanting to know how they, too, could reverse heart disease and reverse type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Baxter Montgomery of Houston, TX was featured on Fox 5 News along with 2 of his patients who reversed type 2 diabetes.

Watch (below) the Fox 5 Atlanta video featuring Dr. Montgomery and two of his patients who reversed their type 2 diabetes:

Transcript of the above video:

Get rid of insulin, control blood sugar, minimize medications, in just a few days? Sound too good to be true? Rosalee Isles did it. She was hospitalized, overweight, suffering from hypertension and high blood pressure when she met Dr. Baxter Montgomery, and he immediately put her on a special diet.
Rosalee: “Three days after I went on this diet, I was taken off the insulin, I had been on insulin since 1987. I no longer take insulin.”

Dr. Montgomery: “By getting on a plant-based diet, and getting her completely off animal flesh, it allowed us to get her off the insulin, and it allowed her to lose weight.”

Rosalee says she lost 35 pounds in two months and reversed her heart disease. This is Rosalee before the diet [shows before picture]; now at the age of 81 she is confident enough to model in fashion shows.

Rosalee: “I feel like a different person ever since I started coming to Dr. Montgomery my life has been different. I’m completely changed.”

Victor Fuller: “The dreaded scale.”

Victor Fuller [at the time, a type 2 diabetic], had just undergone his second life-saving open heart surgery when he turned to Dr. Montgomery. The diet helped him get his heat disease under better control. He no longer has type 2 diabetes, and he lost fifty pounds.

Victor: “At first, I was a little shaky, there, I didn’t want to do it, because I am a “meat and potatoes” man. But then, after he [Dr. Montgomery] told me the ins and outs of what it could do for my body, how I could cleanse my body, then I gave it a try.”

Dr. Montgomery: “The weight loss is very nice, and it’s cosmetic, but the real magic is happening “under the hood” with him. With someone with the amount of vascular disease as he has should not function nearly to the capacity as he functions, and it’s because of the lifestyle change that he has made. That’s what has gotten him to that point.”

[Victor previously was taking 13 medications, now he was down to just four.]

This plan requires some pretty serious dietary changes. Dr. Montgomery encourages people to load up on things like fresh fruit and vegetables, avoiding all animal products, he says go with:

Dr. Montgomery: “Minimally processed, whole food plant-based. I try to avoid terms such as vegetarian or vegan.”

His patients eat food as close to its natural state as possible. He suggests you shuck a corn on the cob and eat it raw or lightly steamed, to keep its nutrients. The biggest step is letting go of meat. Dr. Montgomery has another term for it.

Dr Montgomery: “[When patients have] advanced illness, one of the first things we want to do is remove animal flesh and dairy products from their system. . . .”

Since food often affects us psychologically, it may help to look at it beyond flavor or even texture.

Dr. Montgomery: “If one would eat a cheeseburger now, it would probably taste good for that moment, but from that point on, you only get the adverse effects of that cheeseburger.”

Victor and Rosalee let go of cheeseburgers, and say it works.

Rosalee: “I only put what I am supposed to eat in my refrigerator, freezer, and pantry. That’s the best way you can do it. Don’t bring anything into your house that you can’t have.”

Victor: “I thank God for the pleasure of meeting Dr. Montgomery, because he has changed my life.” – end transcript (video above).

Dr. Montgomery’s Nutritional Bootcamp: Reversing Heart Disease & Reversing Type 2 Diabetes

In 2008, Dr. Montgomery created a one-month Nutritional Bootcamp (located where he practices medicine, in Texas) to help people reverse their heart disease, reverse type 2 diabetes, reduce cholesterol, and lose weight. Dr. Montgomery’s Nutritional Bootcamps still are being offered today, and people who attend get phenomenal results, such as reversal of most chronic health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol and others, reduction or elimination of the need for medications, improved work, sexual and exercise performance, significant healthcare savings and much more. Learn more about Dr. Montgomery’s Nutritional Bootcamps at Dr. Montgomery’s clinic here.

Watch Dr. Montgomery’s presentation in which he offers an excellent analogy for the current chronic disease management system (aka health care)

here.

Dr. Baxter Montgomery Presentation at Healthy Taste of the South Bay 2013 (video screenshot – http://www.healthytasteonline.com)

Dr. Montgomery’s analogy begins with an image of a vice wrench, and he goes on to describe a hypothetical, where someone goes to his doctor with a vice wrench tightly screwed onto his thumb, causing pain and swelling, and describes to his doctor his pain and swelling. The doctor asks if he has had any other similar pain or swelling, and whether he has ever had thumb troubles in the past. The doctor asks if anyone in his family has ever had thumb troubles. The doctor then prescribed medication to ease the pain, in increasing quantities over the weeks, causing sickness and side effects from the medications, and no relief from the vice grip that is the source of the pain. The doctor then refers the patient to other doctors to deal with the side effects caused by the medications, etc., and on an on…

In Dr. Montgomery’s “vice grip” hypothetical/analogy, instead of dealing with the CAUSE of the pain and swelling, in this case, the vice grip tightly screwed onto the thumb, this doctor is dealing only with the symptoms.

As Dr. Montgomery describes in the video above, in the case of type 2 diabetes, the cause is the FOOD, and the CURE is the RIGHT KINDS of FOOD — that is, whole food plant-based foods.

Cure Type 2 Diabetes Permanently

by Leave a Comment

You can cure type 2 diabetes permanently, despite the popular advice that there is nothing you can do about it, that it’s a life sentence of diabetes drugs, insulin, needles, syringes, finger pricks/testing and all that can come with type 2 diabetes, such as amputations, heart disease, neuropathy, blindness, sickness & side effects from the diabetes drugs, … the list goes on. You can cure type 2 diabetes permanently, and growing numbers of top U.S. board certified medical doctors — who also are experts in nutrition — are helping thousands of people reverse type 2 diabetes.

The way to cure type 2 diabetes permanently also prevents and reverses many other illnesses and diseases, including heart disease, auto-immune conditions, and even cancer.

Learn how to cure type 2 diabetes permanently from U.S. board certified medical doctors like these, who are experts worldwide in nutrition, and who have personally helped thousands of people reverse their type 2 diabetes as well as other illnesses and diseases, all using the same method.

In a nutshell, the permanent cure for type 2 diabetes comes down to simply changing the foods you eat for life; switching to eating LOTS of delicious, highly nutritious foods, and cutting out the foods that are the root cause of illness and disease. All that you need to do this can be found in your local grocery store. It’s not complicated, in fact it’s quite simple to follow.

There are many excellent books, documentary films and other resources to inspire you and to offer step by step guidance in making these changes to cure type 2 diabetes permanently, and they are described in the articles here at reversediabetes2.com.

As you read these books and commit to make these changes to cure and reverse type 2 diabetes permanently, it is critical that you do so under the close supervision of your doctor. Let your doctor know that you will be making “diet and lifestyle” changes and need him or her to closely supervise your progress in order to reduce the diabetes medications and insulin to the extent they are no longer needed. It would be very dangerous to continue taking diabetes medications or insulin when and/or to the extent or levels they are no longer needed when you have begun to reverse and cure type 2 diabetes through these nutritional changes.

Keep it simple and begin with one of the books listed below – Dr. Fuhrman’s The End of Diabetes; read it from cover to cover. Apply what you learn.

Read another one (Dr. Barnard’s book, or Dr. Fuhrman’s book, Eat to Live) if you wish to become an expert in your own health for life, so that you can cure your type 2 diabetes, and also prevent and reverse heart disease, auto-immune conditions, and other illnesses and disease, all by simply changing your nutrition with foods you can easily find in your local grocery store. Without measuring or counting calories, without feeling hungry, losing weight practically effortlessly.

The nominal investment in the inexpensive price of the book (or ebook or audio book) plus your time in reading the book (and applying what you learn) can yield the priceless value of reversing your type 2 diabetes and reclaiming your health destiny for life, as thousands of others have done — all beginning with simply reading Dr. Fuhrman’s book The End of Diabetes (or Dr. Neal Barnard’s book), and applying what you learn.

Read Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s book, The End of Diabetes.

Is there a cure for type 2 diabetes? Ask THESE Medical Doctors. . .

by Leave a Comment

Have you or someone you care about ever asked your doctor: What is the cure for type 2 diabetes? Or this: What can I do to get off all of these diabetes drugs?

If you ask your doctor these kinds of questions, and if they tell you that there is nothing you can do about it, (except perhaps a vague suggestion to make “diet and lifestyle” changes), and that type 2 diabetes is a life sentence of diabetes drugs, insulin, and all of the complications and sickness that comes with type 2 diabetes and the diabetes drugs, ask a different doctor the same questions.

More specifically, ask a board-certified medical doctor who is an expert in nutrition and who has personal, first-hand experience and expertise in the power of the right nutrition to prevent and reverse disease and illnesses, including type 2 diabetes.

The board-certified medical doctors listed below have helped hundreds and even thousands of people reverse their type 2 diabetes, so that in most cases patients who follow their advice are able to get off all of the diabetes drugs and insulin, as well as high blood pressure medications, cholesterol medications, and others, in addition to reversing their type 2 diabetes.

Reversing Type 2 Diabetes: Here are just a few of the top experts in nutrition who also are board certified medical doctors.

Collectively (and individually) these board certified medical doctors have many decades of experience helping thousands of people reverse type 2 diabetes. Read on below to learn more about each of these medical doctors.

Dr. Joel Fuhrman (author of the End of Diabetes, Eat to Live and many more)
Dr. John McDougall

Head of cardiology at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL.  Dr. Williams also has served as chairman of the board of the Association of Black Cardiologists, among other positions. Dr. Williams often speaks about the power of whole food plant-based foods to reverse type 2 diabetes in addition to preventing and reversing heart disease.)
Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr. (M.D., Yale graduate, Olympic Gold Medalist, best-selling author)
Dr. Michael Klaper
Dr. Alan Goldhamer
Dr. Anthony Lim (M.D. and Harvard J.D.)
Dr. Baxter D. Montgomery
Dr. Steve Lawenda

Dr. Andrea Avery, MD, Internal Medicine Physician and Professor of Medicine at University of California, Irvine

This is just an initial list that includes some of the top nutritional experts worldwide who also are U.S. board certified medical doctors (having earned their medical degrees from some of the best medical schools).

Also: Hans Diehl, DrHSc, MPH, FACN, program founder and Clinical Professor of Preventative Medicine at Loma Linda University (read more about Dr. Diehl and the Complete Health Improvement Program (“CHIP”) at the Lifestyle Medicine Institute below.

We will continue to add more U.S. board-certified medical doctors to this list.

These medical doctors have practical experience helping people reverse their type 2 diabetes as well as heart disease and many other illnesses and diseases, all through the exact same method: switching to whole food plant-based nutrition.

Many of these doctors have written excellent books on the topic of reversing type 2 diet, (for example, Dr. Fuhrman’s The End of Diabetes), and have online programs to help people with the specific “how to do this” step-by-step guidance.

One of these medical doctors, Dr. Steve Lawenda, not only helps his patients prevent and reverse type 2 diabetes through whole food plant-based nutrition, but he himself reversed his pre-diabetes and no longer is obese since he made these nutritional changes for his own life.

Listen to these board-certified medical doctors (Youtube videos); watch them speak about their patients reversing type 2 diabetes and getting off all of their medications; read the books these doctors have written; visit their websites for more information about their medical practices, as well as their weight loss programs, events, free online programs and more.

Watch the documentaries in which type 2 diabetic patients reverse their type 2 diabetes and usually get off all of the drugs, along with reversing heart disease and other illnesses and disease.

For example, watch the film documentaries Forks Over Knives, What the Health and PlantPure Nation.

In Forks Over Knives, watch Joey Aucoin’s transformation from being type 2 diabetic and taking many diabetes and other drugs that were making him feel awful, to reversing his type 2 diabetes and getting off all of his medications under the supervision of Dr. Matt Lederman and Dr. Aona Pulde.

The medical doctors featured here are experts in the power of whole food plant-based nutrition to prevent and reverse disease and illnesses, often very quickly, within weeks or even days, including reversal of type 2 diabetes in most cases, when a person switches to whole food plant-based foods for their health for life.

Dr. Anthony Lim

Dr. Lim is a board-certified family physician and is the Medical Director of the McDougall Health & Medical Center in Santa Rosa, California. Dr. Lim also is associated as a medical doctor with the TrueNorth Health Center.  Dr. Lim received his undergraduate degree in Human Biology from Stanford University. He earned his law degree from Harvard University Law School, and is a member of the California State Bar. He earned his medical degree from the Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Lim’s life mission is to help people prevent and reverse disease, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, auto-immune conditions and more, through whole food plant-based nutrition.

In addition to being a board-certified medical doctor, Dr. Anthony Lim often gives presentations about the power of whole food plant-based foods to prevent and reverse type 2 diabetes and other illnesses and disease.

Read more here about Dr. Lim and learn about how Dr. Lim helps his patients reverse type 2 diabetes, heart disease and more.

Dr. Joel Fuhrman

Dr. Joel Fuhrman is a board certified family physician and author of many world-wide best selling excellent books on the power of whole food plant-based nutrition — “nutritarian” nutrient-dense foods — to heal, cure, prevent, and reverse illnesses and disease.

Dr. Fuhrman has written many best-selling, life-changing, life-saving books about whole food plant-based nutrition for preventing and reversing disease and illnesses, including Eat to Live, the End of Dieting, and the End of Diabetes, among many other best sellers.

Dr. Fuhrman was one of the top ice skaters in the U.S. before he attended medical school. He has first-hand experience with the power of whole food plant-based nutrition to fuel top athletes for strength and endurance.

Dr. Fuhrman’s work has inspired other medical doctors to also become experts in nutrition.

For example, both Dr. Anthony Lim and Dr. Steve Lawenda first learned about the healing power of whole food plant-based nutrition by accidentally hearing Dr. Fuhrman speak.

Dr. Lim happened to turn the channel to find one of Dr. Fuhrma’s PBS shows; the next day he got Dr. Fuhrman’s book Eat to Live and read it from cover to cover.

Dr. Lawenda’s wife played Dr. Fuhrman’s audio book version of Eat to Live on a long drive home from a family vacation.

Dr. Laurie Marabas read Dr. Fuhrman’s book Eat to Live after she searched for ways to learn more about whole food plant-based nutrition. She had witnessed her patients reverse diseases (including lupus) very quickly (in under 30 days) after switching to a whole food plant-based diet. Dr. Marabas later worked with Dr. Fuhrman as Medical Director of Dr. Fuhrman’s Health Oasis in Boca Raton, Florida.

Discovering Dr. Fuhrman’s work was life-changing for Dr. Lim, for Dr. Lawenda, and Dr. Marabas, among many others, and also contributed to these medical doctors changing the focus and direction and mission of their medical careers.

Watch Dr. Fuhrman’s PBS show (below), in which he describes just a few examples of people who have reversed their type 2 diabetes and gotten off all of their medications by following his nutritarian diet.

“Nutritarian” is a term Dr. Fuhrman coined, which means choosing foods that have the highest nutrients per calorie, and avoiding foods that have low nutrient density – like junk foods, processed foods, and oils, for example. Learn all about nutritarian, whole food plant-based nutrition (along with delicious recipes) in Dr. Fuhrman’s life-changing book, Eat to Live.

Watch Dr. Fuhrman’s PBS presentation, “End Dieting Forever,” here:

In Dr. Fuhrman’s presentation above, watch at 29:57, where Dr. Fuhrman shows Before and After photos of a woman named Laura, from Missouri, who watched one of Dr. Fuhrman’s previous PBS shows, and learned for the first time that type 2 diabetes is reversible with whole foods plant-based nutrition. Laura read Dr. Fuhrman’s book The End of Diabetes, changed the foods she ate following Dr. Fuhrman’s guidance in the book, and reversed her type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Fuhrman is featured in numerous documentaries about preventing and reversing disease with whole food plant-based nutrition.

Just to list a few examples, Dr. Fuhrman is featured in the documentary films, Eating You Alive, Vegucated, and To Your Health, and Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days, among others.

Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr.

Dr. Esselstyn formerly was a heart surgeon but now he instead specializes in preventing and reversing heart disease through whole food plant-based foods (no oil added). Along with reversing heart disease, type 2 diabetic patients often reverse their type 2 diabetes). Watch the documentary Forks Over Knives to see Dr. Esselstyn’s formerly diabetic patient’s health transformation as she reversed her type 2 diabetes. Read about how Dr. Esselstyn helped her reverse her type 2 diabetes here.

Dr. Steve Lawenda

Dr. Steve Lawenda is a board certified family physician with Kaiser Permanente in Southern California. In his earlier years as a medical doctor, he himself was obese and diagnosed with pre-diabetes. His father had suffered from type 2 diabetes and had amputations due to type 2 diabetes complications, before Dr. Lawenda had learned about the power of whole food plant-based nutrition to reverse type 2 diabetes.

Out of the blue, someone gave Dr. Lawenda’s wife an audio book version of Dr. Fuhrman’s book Eat to Live, and she played the audio book over the car speakers while Dr. Lawenda drove the family home from a vacation. This fortuitous timing, playing the audio book during a long drive so that Dr. Lawenda could also hear it while his wife listened to the Eat to Live audio book, turned out to be life-changing both for Dr. Lawenda himself, and later, for his patients, thanks to what he learned from Dr. Furhman’s audio book, Eat to Live. Read more here about Dr. Lawenda’s own health transformation and how he helps his patients reverse type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Baxter D. Montgomery

Dr. Montgomery specializes in internal medicine, clinical cardiac electrophysiology, internal medicine, and cardiovascular disease. He also is the owner of the Houston Cardiac Association and the founder of Montgomery Health & Wellness in Houston, Texas. Dr. Montgomery is a plant-based doctor who has helped his patients reverse their type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and prevent and reverse illness and disease with a whole food plant-based diet. Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Montgomery’s patients come to him with a range of conditions including type 2 diabetes, as well as arrhythmias and coronary disease. He performs angiography, defibrillator implants, and other hospital procedures, and teaches young physicians; for many years now Dr. Montgomery also teaches his patients how to prevent and REVERSE heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and so many other chronic diseases, all using the exact same method, switching to a whole food plant-based diet.

He is the author of The Food Prescription for Better Health: A Cardiologist’s Proven Method to Reverse Heart Disease, Diabetes, Obesity, and other Chronic Illnesses, Naturally!

In 2008, he created a one-month Nutritional Bootcamp (located where he practices medicine, in Texas) to help people reverse their type 2 diabetes, reverse heart disease, reduce cholesterol, and lose weight.

Dr. John McDougall

Dr. John McDougall is a board-certified doctor of internal medicine who has decades of experience helping people prevent and reverse disease. He also is a best-selling author and speaker, and he is one of the leading experts in nutrition. He began his career as a medical doctor in Hawaii, then moved his medical practice to California.

Dr. McDougall founded the McDougall Health & Medical Center in Santa Rosa, California, where people can go in person for a 3-Day Program, a 10-Day Live-In Program and other health programs that help people to lose weight and/or prevent and reverse disease through whole food plant-based nutrition for life. Dr. McDougall’s website also offers a completely FREE online weight loss program, complete with a free 10-Day Meal Plan/recipes. Dr. McDougall has excellent Youtube videos on many health and nutrition topics.

Dr. Dougall ate the standard American diet during his early years (as Dr. McDougall describes it, “I lived on steak and eggs”), and suffered a massive stroke at the age of 18. When he was in his 20’s he worked as a plantation doctor in Hawaii, and noticed that the elderly people he treated (immigrants who ate culturally traditional diets centered around rice) maintained better health than did their children and grandchildren.

Dr. McDougall began to study the scientific findings of early whole food plant-based pioneers such as Nathan Pritikin and Walter Kempner, MD (Duke University), which confirmed Dr. McDougall’s observations about the powerful connection between diet and disease.  Dr. McDougall switched to whole food plant-based nutrition and stopped eating meat and dairy. He felt so good eating whole food plant-based foods, including starchy vegetables, that he advised his patients to do the same.

While Dr. McDougall recently retired from full-time medical practice (in May 2018), he will continue to write books, speak at events, and participate in legislative work relating to nutrition and health, and he will continue to visit with people attending the 3-Day and 10-Day programs at the McDougall Health & Medical Center. Dr. Anthony Lim now is the Medical Director overseeing the McDougall Health & Medical Center.

Dr. Laurie Marbas

Dr. Laurie Marbas is a board certified family medicine physician and is board certified in lifestyle medicine. She has used a whole foods plant-based diet with her patients for the past six years in rural Colorado, and as the former Medical Director for Dr. Fuhrman’s Health Oasis in Boca Raton, Florida. Dr. Marbas is the host of the How to Health podcast, and her website offers online self-guided classes for people who want to transition to a whole foods plant-based diet. Her website also has many resources for parents to help their kids eat healthier too! She also working with Chef Martin Oswald on a new project called Doc and Chef, bringing even more delicious flavor to health.

Dr. Marbas discovered the power of whole food plant-based nutrition to heal and reverse disease by accident, by observing her patient switch to whole food plant-based foods for a month, along with the patient’s 16-year-old daughter. Both Dr. Marbas’ patient and the patient’s daughter experienced remarkable results and were able to get off medications.

Next, Dr. Marbas wanted to see if a whole food plant-based diet could help a different patient who was suffering with lupus: the patient switched to whole food plant-based nutrition and reversed her lupus. Dr. Marbas saw the light, clearly, and she began searching everywhere to learn how to do this as a doctor, how to use whole food plant-based nutrition to help people prevent and reverse disease. She has said that, at the time, she felt “literally like the lone voice in the forest”… she had no one to turn to … until she found Dr. John McDougall, Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, and she began “devouring their books.” She went to the Cleveland Clinic to spend time with Dr. Esselstyn to learn even more. She went to meet Dr. Barnard and joined PCRM’s Food for Life training course.

Dr. Marbas has described how since she had no local dietician with whole food plant-based expertise, as Dr. Marbas worked with her patients, she was presenting to them the power of whole food plant-based nutrition at every opportunity she could. Over the course of nine months she also typed up everything she was learning about what worked as a 30-page handout.

In the mornings she would go through her list of patients for the day, including type 2 diabetics, so she knew in advance to whom she would present the information, highlighter in hand, so that she could begin that conversation when they walked in the door.

Dr. Marbas describes her own typewritten handout as having been instrumental in making the transition easier for her patients, because she had a step-by-step “HOW TO DO IT” handout to give each of them. Her handout shows what to buy (even where to go in the Walmart, as well as grocery stores, and places with limited food choices); which aisles to go down.

Her typewritten 30-page handout helped Dr. Marbas’ patients get “some really amazing results.”

For her patients with pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes, Dr. Marbas helps them to transition to a plant-based diet. She applies what she learned from Dr. John McDougall as well as from Dr. Fuhrman’s books (for example The End of Diabetes, and Eat to Live).

As Dr. Marbas notes, “They don’t teach you how to STOP medications [in med school], so I had to kind of gather what I could in bits and pieces from Dr. McDougall and Dr Fuhrman’s books.” She says that a third of the patients she sees every day are either pre-diabetic or type 2 diabetic, along with some type 1 diabetics. She teaches her patients that if they are on insulin or any types of medications, she and the patient will have to be very careful as they transition to whole food plant-based nutrition.

As Dr. Marbas explained in a recent interview, when her patients switch to whole food plant-based foods full-force, she usually cuts their insulin dose in half so that the blood sugars won’t get too low. She noted that hypertension medications also usually need to be adjusted and reduced when and to the extent the switch to a whole food plant-based diet makes the them unnecessary. (It would be dangerous to continue taking these medications when and to the extent they are no longer needed.)

Read more here about Doctor Marbas and learn how she discusses whole food plant-based nutrition with her type 2 diabetic patients, and how she discusses with them their options and choices. Dr. Marbas’ advice for anyone who has just learned about this whole food plant-based lifestyle, and wants to make these changes, is that they need to do this safely under their doctor’s supervision in order to reduce or eliminate the medications when and to the extent necessary as they medications no longer are needed.

Dr. Marbas suggests that type 2 diabetics making this change can tell their doctor that they are going to really start eating healthy foods and start exercising, and that they are going to need some help from their doctor with the medications to make sure that they are making these “diet and lifestyle changes” safely.
Dr. Marbas also highly recommends that both patients who are type 2 diabetics and their doctors should read these books:

Dr. Joel Furhman’s books (including The End of Diabetes, and Eat to Live among many other best sellers)
Dr. Neal Barnard’s book, Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes
Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn’s book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure
The China Study by T. Colin Campbell, pHd

How can medical doctors (or anyone) learn more about the power of whole food plant-based nutrition to prevent and reverse disease and illnesses, including type 2 diabetes?

For doctors and others who want to learn more about the healing and preventative power of whole food plant-based nutrition, there are excellent programs available, including programs for which doctors can earn continuing education credit.

A few such programs include:

The Plant Certificate Program at Cornell University online (eCornell.com)

The annual International Plant-Based Conference hosted by the Plantrician Project. The International Plant-Based Conference offers doctors the opportunity to learn from top medical experts in the field of nutrition about the role of whole food plant-based foods in preventing and reversing disease and illnesses, including reversing type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Neal Barnard/PCRM’s Food for Life training course. (This is a course that Dr. Laurie Marbas attended.)

In a recent interview, Dr. Lim was asked about whether he is optimistic about other medical doctors learning and applying whole food plant-based nutrition, since he himself experienced such a transformation in his own medical thinking and practice. Here is Dr. Lim’s reply:

Yes. I tend to be an optimistic person by nature, but also I have some evidence to back it up. One of the things I point to is the number of Kaiser healthcare providers who have attended The International Plant-Based Conference put on by the Plantrician Project that is now in its fourth year. The first year it was held, there were less than 5 Kaiser employees that came. The second year, which was in 2014, the same year that my father and I first attended the conference together, there were around 40 Kaiser people. Last year, in 2015, there were almost 100 Kaiser providers! So, in the space of three years we’ve gone from 5 to 40 to 100 Kaiser employees, and who knows how many there will be this year. So it definitely strikes me as a movement that is rapidly picking up momentum.

One interesting thing to note is that among the 100 people that came this past year, virtually all the medical specialties were represented. For example, at a special dinner held during the conference for the Kaiser folks, I just happened to sit at a table with a pulmonologist, a psychiatrist, a nephrologist, and an internist, and then there was myself from family medicine. On top of that, multiple disciplines were represented. In addition to Kaiser Permanente physicians, there were Kaiser nurses, nurse practitioners, registered dietitians, occupational therapists, social workers, and more. It is trends such as this that I have witnessed in just a couple of years that give me great cause for optimism.
