The inspirational documentary Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 days follows the thirty day diabetes reversal journey of six people from different states around the country. They had applied and were chosen (out of hundreds of applicants) to participate in the Simply Raw documentary’s 30-day challenge to REVERSE type 2 diabetes naturally, lower blood pressure, and reduce or eliminate the diabetes drugs, insulin, and blood pressure drugs.
Read on for their Before and After 30 days diabetes reversal results, and watch the documentary (free) below!
The Simply Raw 30-Day Diabetes Reversal Program
The Simply Raw diabetes reversal documentary introduces each of the participants in their home towns, and then follows their dramatic results over the course of 30 days at a natural healing center in a beautiful setting in Arizona, surrounded by mountain ranges in the distance.
The Premise of the 30-Day Simply Raw Diabetes Reversal Challenge
(1) The six participants in the diabetes-reversal challenge would eat the delicious, healthy, raw fiber-rich plant-based meals that would be prepared for them daily, three times a day.
(2) They could eat as much as they liked at each of the three meals each day.
(3) The switch to healthy whole food (in this case, raw) plant-based foods would be all it takes to reduce or eliminate all or most of the drugs/insulin, (as well as, in most cases, reduce or eliminate blood pressure pills).
“Before” Blood Work/Blood Pressure/Numbers
On the first day, each of the participants had all of their blood work run and their blood pressure recorded, etc. to establish the “Before” numbers for each participant.
Gentle Physical Exercise/Walking/Yoga/Outings + Raw Foods Preparation Classes
During the 30 days at the retreat center, the participants also went out hiking and walking, and did some yoga classes together.
They attended cooking classes to learn how to prepare delicious raw plant-based meals, including plant-based deserts.
The Program: 3 Meals a Day, All-You-Can-Eat, Delicious Raw Plant-Foods
The Simply Raw participants ate lots of fiber-filled delicious raw fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, as well as avocado. They also had delicious raw plant-based deserts including creamy chocolate deserts. No meat, no dairy, no sugar, no processed foods, no cooked grains, no caffeine. Nothing cooked at a temperature higher than 118 degrees.
Diabetes Reversal Testimonials from the Simply Raw Documentary Participants: Before and After 30 Days
The Simply Raw: Reverse Diabetes in 30 Days documentary’s six participants each are from different parts of the United States. The participants included Kirt Tyson, 25 years old, of Baltmore, Maryland; Bill, age 58, of Longbeach, California; Pam, age 62, of Sarasota, Florida; Michelle, age 36, of New York City, New York; Henry, age 58 of Reno, Nevada; and Austin, age 25, a type 1 diabetic from Rockford, Michigan.
On their first day of the challenge, the participants were told by the doctors overseeing the program, “We specifically selected people who aren’t familiar with this way of life [raw, whole food plant-based nutrition], so we could show that everyone can do this. So you play an incredibly important role, not just for yourself, but for all of those other people you are going to inspire.”
They had amazing results beginning in just days after switching to whole food plant-based foods in the Simply Raw challenge. Only one participant, Henry, did not complete the challenge (despite having excellent results in lowering his blood sugar and losing weight, he left after around 17 days).
Kirt Tyson, age 25, of Baltimore, Maryland
Kirt Tyson had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes earlier that year, after an emergency room visit and hospital ICU three-day stay resulting from his previously undiagnosed diabetes. (Kirt’s medical doctors later reviewed his earlier medical records and determined that he had previously been misdiagnosed as type 2, and should have been diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic.)
Kirt’s Commitment: “Whatever it Takes.”
From the beginning Kirt was committed 100% to making the necessary changes to reverse his diabetes.
I have always dreamed of living to be 102. That’s one of my goals. So to hear that, already, being so young [at age 25], being diagnosed with something that has a major impact on your heath, it took me for a loop and just made me think that there is so much more that I have to do….So my main thing is just getting back to being healthy and that I STAY healthy. Whatever it takes to get that done, I am WILLING to make that sacrifice.”
– Kirt Tyson, Simply Raw documentary at @2:53 to 3:15.]
Kirt’s mindset, being committed to doing “whatever it takes,” is an important key to his success in reversing his diabetes.
Compare (and contrast) Kirt’s mindset with what Henry said before he began the Simply Raw challenge. Henry’s mindset reflected his results, too. Henry said before arriving in Arizona, “So if this program works for me, hey, I don’t care if Joe Blow can’t handle it, which he might not be able to. Maybe I can, maybe I can’t … maybe someone else can handle it better than I can. It’s just one of those things we are going to have to find out.” – Henry, Simply Raw at 10:52.
“Maybe I can, maybe I can’t” is not the mindset to get the results you want. Despite making dramatic improvements — Henry quit after only a few weeks.
Instead of “Maybe I can,” tell yourself, “I know I can.”
Remember the children’s story, The Little Engine That Could?
Believing “I think I can, I think I can” quickly turns into “I know I can, I know I can” and then you have gotten over that mountain.
Similarly, from the beginning Pam recognized how important commitment and being willing to do what it takes to change is the key to reversing diabetes. Reflecting on the upcoming 30-day diabetes reversal challenge, Pam said, “I want to see how my body is going to react to the change, and to see if it’s really going to help to control my diabetes. But that takes work, and I’ve got to decide if I really want to work for it.” – Pam, Simply Raw at 11:12.
100% Commitment to Reversing Type 2 Diabetes & Your Health for Life
Commitment to changing and doing “whatever it takes,” as Kirt put it, is key.
If you waver, remind yourself about all of the reasons WHY you are committed to making this change.
When Michelle wavered and convinced herself that she wanted to quit (in the first week or so), Kirt reminded her to remember WHY she had committed to making these changes in the first place. Kirt helped Michelle to focus on her reasons for joining the challenge in the first place, especially so that she could be at her best for herself, her son and her husband. That is what it took for Michelle to re-commit, and stay committed, so that she also was able to reverse her diabetes and get off all of the medications in under 30 days.
Kirt’s Results – Before and After the Simply Raw 30 Day Diabetes Reversal Challenge
After only two weeks Kirt’s blood sugar had dropped 214 points to 73 (normal) without medication. Kirt Tyson was off all of the diabetes medications and off the insulin in under 30 days.
After the documentary, Kirt (who already had a B.S. in biology from Morehouse University) went back to school to become a naturopathic doctor, in order to help others reverse diabetes naturally. He founded and runs a naturopathic health clinic in Washington, DC. He is an impressive person and has achieved a great deal at a young age. Bill, 58, of Longbeach, California
When we first meet Bill in the Simply Raw documentary, he was suffering from type 2 diabetes along with neuropathy and also was seeing a cardiologist for heart problems. He wanted to improve his health to be there for his wife and son.
As Bill is introduced, we see him shopping at an Italian deli, and then sharing a meal with his family. He talked about the central social role that food and communal meals have in the welcoming tradition of Italian families:
When I was growing up the Italian people were always saying, ‘Mangia, Mangia!’ [‘Eat, Eat!’] Food was a very precious thing, the greatest gift they could give to their family and friends…. My wife is such a good cook, she cooks just like in the Old Country…”
– Bill, Simply Raw
On the other hand, Bill also talked about how dangerous and debilitating his type 2 diabetes and neuropathy, as well as his heart conditions, have been, as a result of eating the standard Western diet.
As Bill described his health at the beginning of the documentary,
About 10 years ago I went to my cardiologist, [due to
a hypertension problem] and [my doctor told me, “You are borderline type 2 diabetic.”] and I heard the word ‘diabetes’ and I had no idea how DEVASTATING this is to your LIFE. – Bill, Simply Raw at 4:06, with drugs lined up all along the full length of the bathroom shelves in the background.
Bill continued,
You have no idea how devastating this is to your life. …
The consequences, I mean, my God, it affects every organ system:
your vision,
your kidneys,
sexual dysfunction,
and the other things,
[including] neuropathy in the feet …. My feet slowly became NUMB.”- – Bill, Simply Raw at 4:02 – 4:12
At the beginning of the documentary, Bill talked about how he had accidentally burned his foot badly (third degree burns) due to the neuropathy. He did’t even feel his foot burning, but instead smelled the burning flesh, literally cooking (as he described it). Due to the neuropathy he couldn’t feel his foot at all; another severe health danger related to type 2 diabetes.
He also talked about he always ate a lot and whatever he wanted and that food was a kind of pacifier for him.
But upon learning about the Simply Raw 30 day program, he was ready to commit.
If this will cure me in a MONTH from diabetes, [BIG SMILE], Oh Lord! I would love to tell the world about that, absolutely.”
– Bill, Simply Raw
Bill seemed to have a great, supportive attitude throughout the 30-day challenge in the documentary.
He often expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to change his life by doing the Simply Raw challenge, as well as his amazement and joy at the quick reversal of his type 2 diabetes as well as weight loss in under 30 days.
He also happily celebrated his co-participant’s dramatic health changes, too.
Bill’s Results – Before and After the Simply Raw 30 Day Diabetes Reversal Challenge
In only 4 days, Bill had stopped taking 19 medications.
By the second week, Bill’s blood sugar had dropped 205 points down to 88, well within the normal range, without medication.
After two weeks, he had lost 25 pounds.
In under 30 days, he had lost 32 pounds, and his blood sugar had dropped 214 points down to to 74 (normal range), without any diabetes medication or insulin.
Pam, 62, of Sarasota, Florida
“Aunt Pam” (as she was affectionately nicknamed by her co-participants in the documentary) is a devoted mother, grandmother and wife who was suffering with type 2 diabetes, and searching for a solution.
Pam’s father had type 2 diabetes, and her brother and sister also are diabetic, and Pam believes that the way they all ate contributed to causing their diabetes.
Pam’s Results – Before and After the Simply Raw 30 Day Diabetes Reversal Challenge
Pam’s blood sugar dropped 167 points down to 112, without medication.
Pam also lost 26 pounds.
When she returned back home after the challenge, her medical doctor in Florida seemed amazed by her results, and he quipped, “How do we ship all of my patients to Arizona?”
A better question: How do we share with everyone — including many more medical doctors — the power of whole-food plant-based foods to prevent and reverse diabetes? How do we share the power of whole food plant-based foods to prevent and reverse heart disease, and many other illnesses and diseases that result from eating the standard American diet? Sharing this information through testimonials of people who have reversed type 2 diabetes is the mission of reversediabetes2.com.
Michelle, 36, of New York City, New York
Michelle is a mother and wife who struggled with her weight and type 2 diabetes, as well as having used food as an emotional comfort since her childhood. She was motivated to join the Simply Raw challenge for herself, for her son and her husband.
There is so much that I want to do, but I am being held back, first by my diabetes and my health.” – Michelle, Simply Raw at 5:30.
Upon arriving in Arizona for the Simply Raw challenge, Michelle seemed to enjoy the delicious raw whole food plant-based challenge meals.
However, Michelle almost gave up after a week or so for a number of reasons. She was disappointed in her results after the first couple of days, because they weren’t as dramatic right away as the other participants’ immediate results seemed to be. (As she stuck with the challenge, her results quickly mirrored the excellent results of her co-participants.)
Michele also was missing her 10-year-old son and her husband who were back at home in New York.
Kirt and others helped to convince her to remember the reasons why she had signed up for the challenge in the first place, and she stayed.
Michelle’s Results – Before and After the Simply Raw 30 Day Diabetes Reversal Challenge
Within only two weeks, Michelle’s blood sugar had dropped 121 points without medication.
By the end of the challenge, Michelle had stopped taking all of her medications and lost 23 pounds.
Her blood sugar dropped from 291 down to 109, and she was off the diabetes medications and insulin.
Michelle, also mentioned that she had previously had some lumps in her breast for over 15 years, but within a few weeks of eating the raw plant-based diet during the Simply Raw 30-day challenge, the lumps were gone and her breast now was completely smooth.
Henry, 68, of Reno, Nevada
The switch to raw plant-based nutrition was more challenging for Henry than for the other participants. Henry disliked the raw plant-based foods (seemingly more so on a psychological level) and was the only participant not to stay with the challenge for the full 30 days.
At the beginning of the documentary, Henry took insulin plus nine medications daily. His blood sugar was at 464 (even while taking the diabetes medications, his blood sugar was that high on day 1).
By day 12, Henry’s blood sugar had dropped 256 points down to 208, without using medications. He had gotten off 17 different pills plus insulin.
By the time Henry left the challenge (day 17), his numbers and his health had improved dramatically: he was no longer taking 17 medications, he had lost 30 pounds, and his blood pressure had decreased. But he still left.
Earlier in the documentary Henry had talked about how his grandmother suffered from type 2 diabetes and amputations of both her feet, then amputations of her legs up to the knees, and more, and died as a result of the type 2 diabetes. Despite what happened to his grandmother as a result of type 2 diabetes, and despite Henry’s excellent results after only two weeks, he still left.
It’s worth emphasizing that this film and 30-Day challenge used only raw plant-based foods, which is far more restrictive than a whole food plant-based diet would be.
More recent films like Forks Over Knives, What the Health, and Plant Pure Nation, (links below) among many others, show that a much broader whole food plant-based lifestyle can reverse diabetes type 2 quickly and naturally in a short time, with a much greater variety of food choices than just raw plant foods.
It is likely that someone like Henry, who seems to have had a hard time with the sudden switch to solely raw plant-based foods, could acclimate much better and easier to the many kinds of filling, delicious foods in the greater/broader universe of whole food plant-based foods.
LEARN MORE below about raw plant-based foods and the broader foods available in a whole food plant-based diet that also can reverse type 2 diabetes quickly.
Austin, 25 years old, of Rockford, Michigan
Austin had been diagnosed with juvenile diabetes as a child. In the documentary, Austin described to his documentary roommate, Kirt, how he “almost died when he was 11” due to previously-undiagnosed juvenile diabetes, and had to begin taking insulin shots daily.
By his mid-twenties (25 years old at the time of the documentary), he also had the added challenge of struggling with alcohol, which was even more dangerous for Austin due to his type 1 diabetes.
Austin’s Results – Before and After the Simply Raw 30 Day Diabetes Reversal Challenge
Austin, who is type 1 diabetic, lost 20 pounds and reduced his insulin from 70 units down to 5, a major improvement for his health.
Additional Benefits, in addition to Reversing Type 2 Diabetes
The switch to raw plant-based foods / whole food plant-based also has many other health benefits, as evidenced by the dramatic improvement in the Simply Raw 30-Day Challenge participants’ blood work/blood pressure numbers, and by their testimonials about how great they began to feel, very quickly, upon making this nutritional change.
Challenge participants also described greatly increased clarity and energy, in addition to substantial weight loss.
Some participants (in a subtle, polite way) alluded to the power of whole food plant-based foods to reverse erectile dysfunction, in addition to reversing high blood pressure and heart disease. Michelle had had lumps in her breast for more than 15 years, which disappeared after only a few weeks during the challenge.
Kirt reported that he gained two pounds of muscle by the end of the 30 day raw plant-food diabetes reversal challenge.

Simply Raw Featured Interviews: Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Tony Robbins, Dr. Michael Beckwith, Morgan Spurlock and Woody Harrelson
Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days also features inspirational interview segments about improving health and healing type 2 diabetes with Dr. Joel Fuhrman, world-class personal achievement coach Tony Robbins, minister and author Dr. Michael Beckwith, film producer Morgan Spurlock (director of the film, Supersize Me), and actor Woody Harrelson.
Morgan Spurlock, film producer, Super Size Me set the tone for one of the themes of the Simply Raw documentary:
We have become so pharmaceuticalized… that [using] anything different, like, just healthy foods [instead of drugs], is like [being] a “witch doctor”
– Morgan Spurlock, (laughing), Simply Raw at 20 min..
Important Note: A Whole Food Plant-Based Lifestyle also Can Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally in Many Cases — with far more food options than solely “raw” plant foods
Again, one major point to note when watching the Simply Raw film is that their 30-day challenge was restricted to only raw plant-foods. One of the participants, Henry (who ended up quitting at around 2 weeks), seemed to have a psychological aversion simply to eating healthy natural unprocessed foods, especially “cold turkey” (so to speak), directly from eating very unhealthfully for decades, possibly for most or all of his life.
It is possible (even likely) that Henry, or someone who has what seems like a psychological aversion to healthy raw natural unprocessed foods, would do much better eating the larger selections and kinds of foods available in a whole food plant-based diet — not restricted just to raw plant-foods — and still get excellent results in reversing type 2 diabetes, quickly (often reducing or eliminating diabetes drugs within days or weeks, under close medical supervision of their medical doctor).
In a broad brush stroke, raw plant-based foods can be described as a subset of healthy delicious whole food plant-based nutrition. However, with the “raw” aspect (nothing cooked higher than 118 degrees) there are fewer menu/recipe options than with whole food plant-based nutrition that is not restricted to only raw foods.
Whole food plant-based nutrition (not restricted to just the “raw” subset) can have the same results in terms of quickly reversing type 2 diabetes as would the raw subset of uncooked fruits and vegetables. The raw plant-based foods subset of delicious fiber-filled vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, is part of a whole food plant-based diet, along with the addition of soaked & cooked beans, cooked grains, baked foods, and other menu items that are cooked above 118 degrees (such as plant-based soups, chili, veggie burgers, grains, and many other plant-based foods that are not solely “raw.”)
A whole foods plant-based diet that is not exclusively “raw” has more diverse menu options available, yet still, many whole foods plant-based foods are by their nature raw in the first place (abundant salads, raw veggies, fruit, fruit-and-veg smoothies, nuts, seeds and many more).
By way of example (and contrast), the participants in the documentary PlantPure Nation who eat the PlantPure prepared meals in the Mebane, NC segment of that documentary clearly enjoy the delicious, wide range of whole food plant-based foods, and they all had extraordinary results in their blood work after only 10 days eating the delicious PlantPure whole food plant-based foods.
A broad selection of whole food plant-based foods like the foods enjoyed in Forks Over Knives, and PlantPure Nation can be easier for many people to adapt to initially, rather than switching to solely raw plant foods straight from an unhealthy standard Western diet.
You can find the entire step-by-step plan for delicious, whole food plant-based nutrition, along with recipes in the companion books to Forks Over Knives, and in the companion cookbook to PlantPure Nation.

As with any diet and lifestyle change, and as described in Dr. Fuhrman’s books, it is important to consult with your medical doctor/under close supervision so that when and to the extent you no longer need the diabetes drugs or other drugs, your medical doctor can reduce or eliminate the drugs when and to the extent they are no longer needed. As described in The End of Diabetes, it would be very dangerous to continue taking diabetes drugs when and to the extent they are no longer needed.
Changing your health destiny is a choice, not only to reverse type 2 diabetes naturally, but also to prevent cancer and prevent or reverse heart disease, auto-immune diseases and many others, all from switching to whole food plant-based foods.
